Single mom lands NASA internship, and strangers raise $8K to cover the costs
A single mother will begin a coveted summer internship at NASA later this month, thanks to strangers who helped cover the expenses. India Jackson, a Ph.D candidate in physics and mom to Jewel, 11, said she wan’t sure how she was going to pay for housing, travel and other costs in order to complete the 10-week internship in Houston, Texas. But then, her cousin launched a crowdfunding page — and donations came pouring in.
In less than two days, $8,510 was raised for Jackson.
“Some people gave $3, $1, $5 — whatever they could give,” Jackson, of Atlanta, Georgia, told “Good Morning America.” “I was extremely overwhelmed with hope and promise and joy. I am forever grateful to everyone on that donor list and I sent personal thank you’s. Some people I knew, most people I don’t and it’s amazing of what humanity can bring regardless of race, gender.
“It was everyone all over the world giving, to help me achieve my dream,” she said.

“I definitely didn’t imagine being in the place I am today,” she said. “Money was always an issue, cars always break down. My daughter always comes first, so I had my final exams next week when she was taking her milestones test [at school], so when she was asleep I had to study.”

Interns must pay for their own travel and lodging while in the program, Jackson said, adding that she wouldn’t be able to afford the expenses for her and her daughter.
Then, Jackson’s cousin Dasha Fuller stepped in. The mom of three, who also resides in Georgia, launched a GoFundMe to help ease some of the financial burden.
“What I love about her is her determination,” Fuller told “GMA.” “She’s been in school for a long time. It’s very hard to do school, work and take care of her daughter. I like her motivation to go hard and show her daughter there’s more to life — that intelligence takes her a long way.”
(MORE: Inside NASA’s plan to launch a spacecraft to smash into an asteroid) Fuller created the GoFundMe for Jackson on May 7. A total of 261 helped exceed the $8,000 goal by $510. That’s when Jackson asked Fuller to close the page for donations, she said.
“We don’t become scientists to make money. We become scientists to make history,” Jackson said. “There are no words, only emotion that I have. Who doesn’t want to work for NASA? [I’m] ecstatic.”
Jackson and her daughter are leaving for NASA at the end of May and will return 10 weeks later.

Elton John biopic ‘Rocketman’ blows Cannes away
1 / 5 The 72-year-old British singer seemed to have difficulty walking as he posed on the red carpet next to Taron Egerton The Elton John biopic “Rocketman” took the Cannes film festival by storm Thursday, with the warts-and-all movie about his wild rock ‘n’ roll years wowing critics.
The extended standing ovation for the film brought its director Dexter Fletcher and star Taron Egerton — who plays the singer — to tears.
With some critics saying it was among the most searingly honest biopic in years, Variety’s Stuart Oldham tweeted minutes after the end that “‘Rocketman is fantastic, a musical drama that hits all the right notes, especially the sad ones.”
The Hollywood Reporter’s Rebecca Keegan was equally euphoric, lavishing praise on “hot damn Taron Egerton (who) is the real deal. ‘Rocketman’ is a musical about picking yourself up off your ass and Taron delivers the sweat, grit and vulnerability it needs.”
Indiewire predicted a box office smash for this “ambitious full-on bio musical with 20 songs”.
John could not hide his joy at the reception, hugging the cast and his longtime lyricist and friend Bernie Taupin, who is a major character the film.
The 72-year-old British musical megastar seemed to have difficulty walking as he posed for the paparazzi on the red carpet before the premiere.
Cannes director Thierry Fremaux had hinted that Sir Elton, who has admitted he nearly died from a rare viral infection two years ago, might play before the film.
“A piano will be hidden behind the curtain,” he told reporters, with the star also rumoured to perform at a private party afterwards in the French Riviera resort.
He did not perform at the premiere but took part in a sing-along at the beach.
Wearing a dark suit with “Rocket Man” written in silver sequins on the back, he wiped away a tear under his heart-shaped sequined sunglasses as the lights went down in the cinema for the film to begin.
Taupin put a hand on his knee and smiled to reassure him.
Earlier Sir Elton laughed off what looked like a problem with his hip when he appeared for a photocall in an eggshell-blue suit and matching diamond-encrusted glasses.
Instead, the showman joked with husband David Furnish — who produced the film — and stuck out his tongue at actor Taron Egerton who plays him.
The singer said last year he would be retiring from touring after a three-year farewell tour.
– ‘Hard-hitting and truthful’ –
Furnish said the movie, which was a decade in the making, is brutally frank about the singer’s struggles with drugs, alcohol and most of all, his sexuality.
“We didn’t want to compromise the fact we felt it had to be hard-hitting and truthful,” he said.
“I think we would have got a lot more interest (from studios)… if we’d been willing to produce a more sanitised version of Elton’s life.
“That never appealed to Elton,” he said.
“His life has had incredible moments of lightness but also moments of real darkness. We wanted to be very honest about those and not gloss them over.”
Although the film is also directed by Dexter Fletcher — who was drafted in to save the Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” — and has a thumping jukebox soundtrack, the parallels end there, the filmmaker insisted.
That near-billion-dollar blockbuster was criticised for drawing a veil over much of the Queen frontman’s private life, something that cannot be said of “Rocketman”, Fletcher told AFP.
– ‘The beauty to be honest’ –
“Elton is a gay man and we know that, we also know Freddie was gay,” Fletcher added.
The singer, who helped campaign for gay marriage, “gave us his blessing and the strength and the beauty to be honest. It’s real”.
While parts of Elton John’s five-decade career was lived in a hazy whirl of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, he set up his AIDS foundation in 1992, months after his friend Mercury died of the disease.
It has since raised more than $400 million (357 million euros).
Fletcher said that despite the huge success of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, his real passion was always for “Rocketman”.
“I did what I had to do (on the Freddie Mercury film) but really my focus was always ‘Rocketman’.”
Fletcher said the film is not “an official biography,” but instead an expression of John’s own memories which, given his years of hard partying, were sometimes a blur.
“We are inside Elton’s memories of his life… things get mixed up and confused,” said the director.
“Rocketman” centres on the flamboyant performer’s relationship with his lyricist Taupin, who is played by Jamie Bell of “Billy Elliot” fame.
British actor Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”) is his lover and former manager John Reid.

C5-Q73The Church of God will be perse-cuted, and the holy temples will bepillaged, the mother will put out thechild, naked in a shift. The Arabswill ally with the Poles. N: This is the fall of the religion as we know it today. It refers to the Vatican, and all countries under false prophets who manipulate people through fear and guilt. As Rome is not really of Christ and the Arabs are not really of Mohammed’s teachings , so they will equally fall. Both of these teachings were trying to make a philosophy of God’s love and universal law. Man has changed all of these religions and teachings for his own greed, control and manipulation. D: Then this is not only the Catholic Church. It deals with all the main religions. That word for “shift” is “chemise” in the French. I think it means a dress or something like that. I can see symbolism of “the mother will out out a child.” But “naked in the shift” would seem contradictory. If someone was naked they wouldn’t be clothed. N: No. This, I think, is old terms, old talk. Back in Nostradamus’ time, because of modesty, they felt as naked in a shift, which was under-garment, as they would without it. No one of propriety would have ever, ever been seen that way. D: I see, it would be a disgrace, in his way of thinking. “The Arabs will ally with the poles.” N: Well this picture isn’t very clear. But I think again out of fear and desperation there might be a new contacts. Things will be in great upheaval as this occurs. Religion is not the way the original leaders wanted humankind to experience it. It should be a way of life in universal law and God’s law. Humanity manipulated it into something it never was. The way he puts it, events in recent past history in your century that seemed very horrible will seem child’s play by comparison to what is coming.I laughed nervously. I certainly didn’t like to imagine what he was describing.B: He says that you chose to be here at this time. There is now a higher proportion of old souls in the world than there has ever been before because the old souls will be needed to help the world to survive. You will find them everywhere, permeated in the oddest places. The old souls will be in communication with each other and they are the ones that will help things hold together and survive. But there are other paths where various amounts of these could be avoided. He says the time of troubles will be a very trying and difficult time. The spirits on the earth at this time are here because they chose to be here, because they knew that any spirit on the earth at this time will be working through large amounts of major karma . He’s showing me a picture. He’s not giving me words. It’s a great karmic wheel divided up into larger sections instead of smaller sections and there are people working off these larger sections as if they were the smaller sections. It’s like working off concentrated karma. He says the amount of karma the spirits who live through these times will be able to work off would be the equivalent of ten lifetimes at any other time in earth history . D: Is that why he thinks they volunteered to come back at this time? B: He says many of them did volunteer, such as your older and more advanced spirits who are needed here to help everybody pull through. There are also some younger spirits here at this time who were just simply feeling adventuresome. However, there are some spirits who are here not necessarily because they wanted to come in their hearts, but because they knew they had to or it would be the end of the line for them, so far as spiritual development goes. So they’re not fully volunteers but just enforced volunteers, so to speak, because they knew they had no other choice . D: I think those kind of people would be unhappy here. KI’s Alon Shtruzman on Shifting Business Models
KI’s Alon Shtruzman on Shifting Business Models KI’s Alon Shtruzman on Shifting Business Models Mansha Daswani 23 hours
Alon Shtruzman, the CEO of Keshet International (KI), sat down for a keynote conversation with World Screen ’s Anna Carugati at NATPE’s L.A. Screenings Independents Producers Summit ahead of the market’s official kick-off today, discussing how the company is responding to changes in the production and distribution landscape.
“TV is in an ongoing change,” Shtruzman noted, “mainly because technology is a big factor. It allows us to always step up in terms of production and distribution. We’re experiencing a complete disruption of everything, from basic consumption habits to the way we sell and make shows.”
The “Netflix effect” is seeing the industry move more towards “bingeable shows, high-end production,” Shtruzman said, and noted the rising prevalence of foreign-language series around the world. “Foreign languages became mainstream. It’s really a great time for content makers. Content has never been so sought after. I think the entire value chain of TV making, from the kind of ideas we’re looking for to the way we produce, sell and distribute, everything is changing.”
KI has long been in the business of selling Israeli IP, made for its sister broadcaster, around the world. “We realized the market is moving towards vertical deals. Seven years ago, a piece of IP like Homeland / Prisoners of War could have been sold for remakes in every language. Homeland as a business is exactly opposite from the way distribution behaves today. Homeland the IP became a local production in six languages. The most famous is the American [version]. The Israeli tape, the original Hatufim / POW , was sold to dozens of countries. Those days are gone. Now you most likely make one deal and that’s it. If Netflix buys a show, that’s it; they buy the show, they take all rights, exploit it for years and it’s gone. In many cases, the big streamers prefer the original to a remake. That gives the opportunity to local writers to get global exposure, but it gives us less opportunities to monetize the same IP. As long as you know how to change your business and behave in this constantly changing environment, the base is growing.”
Shtruzman then talked about KI’s various production hubs around the world. Moving more into production has been key to the company’s growth, he said. “Production is becoming a crucial part of the business,” he said.
The hubs are “in local languages. On the one hand, it’s becoming a global market but on the other, it’s very local. Think global but act local.”
The U.S. hub had two pickups this week, Lincoln for NBC and The Baker and the Beauty , based on an Israeli show, for ABC. There will be a Keshet Studios-produced show on HBO this summer. “It’s a very unique thriller,” was all Shtruzman could say about the secretive project.
“Owning IP is the key for success,” Shtruzman went on to say. “We buy shows, we buy books, we develop scripts, we shoot pilots. For us, it’s all about developing IP. IP is the king. If you have great IP and you know how to package it, there are endless opportunities. We have our own IP, we also opt into IP in early stages. The earlier you opt in, the bigger chunk of the IP you can have.”
The conversation then moved to KI’s activities in India. “India is the next big market. China is complicated because of the regulations. The American market is quite saturated. India is more than emerging; it’s happening. It has a dynamic and professional production business. There’s a legacy of production—there are many writers, directors and producers. So it’s only natural that this shift to high-end TV shows will be expedited in India. They have the industry, they have the talent, and the appetite.”
The OTT landscape in India is exploding, Shtruzman noted, boosting the already busy production sector.
KI has already had success in India with STAR adapting Prisoners of War , while Rising Star has been a hit for Colors. “We have a pretty big presence in India. We have a few new commissions in the market. The appetite is endless and the potential is blue-sky.”
Carugati then asked Shtruzman about Keshet’s approach to taking bets on new entertainment format concepts, as it did with Rising Star and 2025 . “It became a strategy for us to take big swings and big risks. That’s a way to stand out for a small country in the Middle East. In general, Israel is all about taking risks. We live in risk-taking. The Israeli high-tech industry is all driven by risk-taking.”
He continued, “If you want to stand out, if you want to win the audience, you need to be unusual, you need to be disruptive. The bar is being pushed up and up.”
Shtruzman then talked about the importance of partnerships. “We used to sell shows, now we’re setting up shows. I used to get a commission; not anymore, now it’s co-development, co-ownership, it’s a much more sophisticated market. Many shows have co-producers. Some shows have more than one network. We see more and more the networks and platforms want to own shows, they want to be more creatively involved. So besides selling IP, we’re also co-developing IP. We come with a piece of IP we both like and create a new show. We just developed a show with NTV in Russia. We developed and co-produced a show with Telemundo. We started with an idea and created a whole show together with the partners. It’s a model that many producers experience now. It’s another business model that is becoming more viable.”
KI has set up a fund to deficit finance scripted shows. It has already announced a collaboration with BBC One for The Trial of Christine Keeler and is working on a title with ABC in Australia. “We’re looking for opportunities to opt-in as financiers. We also use the money for our own shows.”
