My name is Boipelo Manyowa, I am black, I am 28, I am an African, but I am ashamed to stand as a South African. I think I am a pebble in the sea, that is how small I am and probably how small my opinions matter in the ocean. But I cannot as a human being, an African, a mother and a wife remain silent. In the last few days local criminals have run riot, attacking fellow black Africans in the name of fighting crime. Their method of dealing with crime has been to commit crime. (I will touch on this later) The most unfortunate thing about all this is that, they have targeted the most vulnerable members of our community (yes, foreigners are a part of our community as long as they call our country home). People who have travelled great lengths just to provide for their families are being targeted, beaten, stoned, burnt alive and their properties destroyed. This is wrong on all levels. A 100 years ago some of these borders did not even exist. European gangsters colonized our land and told us we are different. They divided us and shared our land among themselves as if it were slices of Pizza. Years after defeating these racists, we now enforce their borders and their definitions of our forced differences louder than they do. Ironically, Chinese run several businesses with appalling working conditions for blacks. Eastern Europeans run criminal enterprises left right and center. These people are never called foreigners nor are they ever defined as different from us. It hurts me because everywhere I have travelled first a young student, then as a budding businesswoman and later as a companion to my husband, I have been treated with so much love and respect. From the warm streets of Lilongwe, to the clean ones in Rwanda and the mesmerizing ones in Nairobi, I have been loved and respected. I have lived in these places with an unshaking sense of peace and security, something I can only crave for my fellow Africans in South Africa right now. My husband is 29-year-old Zimbabwean gentleman whom I have known since 2003 and loved for years. He is my pen pal who became my everything. He is a very complicated man of many talents and weaknesses in equal measure. When he first came to South Africa, he was fleeing persecution by his government for his work. He is a journalist with an adrenaline addiction. He arrived in Pretoria with a dream, a dream that made me give up everything to be a part of. Together we have seen all but one of the continents in this world. My family have grown to adore him, and he has made Zimbabwe a home for me, and a place I will be buried after my death. More importantly my husband is responsible for over 20 children here in South Africa (and he will be upset I let this secret out). These children are South African and all but two are orphans. He does not make a lot of money (journalists are poor) but the little he makes he uses it to change lives. Perhaps I should mention that my husband is no longer based in South Africa and only returns to perform critical business and rarely. The orphaned children in who look up to him have not been abandoned or left alone. From the shores of the far east, he makes sure they are fed and clothed. He does not see these children as South African children but just children. He is not alone, and not an exception to the rule but much rather a norm. I have had the absolute pleasure of living in Zimbabwe for a considerable amount of time too. I love the people there, their amazing culture and the serene beauty of the landscapes. My stay, as indeed my contact with many Zimbabweans has not always been pleasant. South African stoning a foreigner I have been insulted, heckled, attacked, lied about, harassed, bullied among many other despicable things by strangers who do not know me but long made up their minds that I deserve to be hated. It’s not a lie that my nationality played some part in this too. Comments asking for “that South African b*tch to be raped and killed together with Maynard Manyowa (my husband)” are something I deal with daily but have never gotten used to, though I refuse to let it affect me (I generally never allow other human beings to control my state of mind let alone emotions). As you can see, I have had several unpleasant encounters with Zimbabweans, but I don’t recall being made to feel any less Zimbabwean (Yes, I am a Zimbabwean). Despite all the abuse I have faced, I have never had Zimbabwean people attempt to set my business alight in Harare, or my car or my house. To add to that, I have learnt over time, that the cruel and abusive hounds that dislike me and abuse me are just about a dime dozen. I can never allow a few rogue elements in a country of 18 million people (local and abroad) to define my relations with everyone else. Zimbabweans, like Malawians, Zambians, Kenyans, Tanzanians, Sudanese, Congolese and Burkinabe people are among the warmest, hardworking and honest individuals I have ever met. As my experience has taught me with Zimbabweans (I interacted with them a lot) and Malawians (my husband works for and with Malawians), there are always bad apples out there. I am saying this because am hoping my own brothers and sisters committing these acts know that crime has no nationality. I have been the victim of crime 4 times, and not once were my assailants foreign. I grew up in the North West before moving to Pretoria. It’s simply not true that its only foreigners who commit crime. This evil scapegoating is wrong and really makes me hang my head in shame. I also do not understand how people fight murder by killing people, stoning cars, or firing randomly at passing trucks. Is that not criminal itself? I mean ever since all this began, the only people I have seen committing arson, robbery, malicious damage to property, attempted murder and assault are South Africans. The people they claim to be criminals, many of them poor, vulnerable women and children are only running for dear life. So, who is the real criminal there? I am yet to see any drug lords busted in this crime spree. I am yet to see any real criminals arrested. All I see and have seen is desperate vendors, barbers, car guards, and cleaners being targeted. A lot of what is happening right now makes me sick to the stomach. It also makes me hurt in deep places. Some of this just makes me angry too. I am one of those people who just does not want to bear testimony to things I did not see so I won’t speak about the role other countries played in South Africa’s independence. I will speak as a human being with basic sense of compassion for others, as a black African who has called 9 African countries home. Even as I write this, my heart is heavy, because, in places Hong Kong, far far away, where blacks are as rare as hen’s teeth, my husband and I have been allowed to settle, establish business, and exist on this planet without being made to feel like some kind of other. What you are doing fellow South Africans is wrong. Whichever way you will want to justify it. You are the criminals and not the other way around, and I am ashamed that people look at me and think I too think like you – in such an evil, depraved and cruel manner. Again, I think I am a pebble in the sea, that is how small I am and probably how small my opinions matter in the ocean. But you all need to reflect. We’re still a few weeks away from The Flash’s sixth season, but Iris West and her new ‘do have us clicking our heels in anticipation.
Season 5 ended on a despairing note, as Barry (Grant Gustin) and Iris’s (Candice Patton) daughter Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) quite literally disintegrated into thin air, leaving the West-Allen family in mourning for the upcoming season. Sendhil Ramamurthy ( New Amsterdam) has been named the villain for Season 6, and ahead of the finale, Eric Wallace was designated showrunner.
While the prospective season looks very promising, the show’s very own Candice Patton unveiling a new hairstyle for Iris in a future episode is arguably the most exciting news yet, and not just because it strays from Iris’s typical look.
You may wonder why Patton wearing her natural hair for an episode is a big deal. It’s just a hairstyle after all. But to black women, it’s that and more: it’s a commemoration of our natural beauty and heritage, which is often ignored or watered-down in mainstream media. Means a lot to wear my curls on The Flash. And I know it will to so many of you who look like me. ➿

The cultural significance surrounding black hair and its diversity is huge. Sure, the celebration of natural black hair doesn’t have to be a political statement, but in Patton’s case, it’s both a celebration and a conversation about the need for diversity behind the camera.
Black women in the workforce who choose to sport their natural hair are often met with backlash and negativity from their management, or even worse, face consequences. They are told to compromise, to straighten their “unkempt” hair to fit society’s standards, causing deep-rooted self-hatred and insecurities. A black student was told she wouldn’t be able to take her exams until she tied her hair up to make it more “beautiful.”
Straight hair is deemed more “professional” in workplaces, which can be chalked up to discomfort with black women being themselves, or blatant anti-blackness. To be frank, if you’re not a black woman, you won’t understand the struggle surrounding embracing natural hair confidently, not to mention the further layered discrimination accompanying various textures of black hair.
Straight hair is typically associated with Eurocentric beauty standards, and while black women straightening their hair cannot be considered wanting to emulate such beauty standards (and is a topic for another conversation altogether), Iris West has been rocking straight hair for five seasons.
Despite Patton doing so gracefully, the choice to have Iris West continuously wear straight hair across various settings, circumstances, and storylines in 114 episodes of The Flash reaffirms the notion that straight hair is more presentable. It enforces the bias that natural, curly hair isn’t “beautiful” or even acceptable enough to be broadcast on television, let alone worn in real life.
It needs to be noted that the decision to have Iris West sport her natural hair has only come at the agreement of showrunner Wallace, who is also African-American. Patton has previously advocated for diversity behind the screen, including hiring hairdressers who know how to style black hair, and has even requested to wear her natural hair on the show before. It’s troubling to learn that her request was denied under the direction of previous show-runner Todd Helbing, further proof of the need for diversity in all facets of the entertainment industry.
“Now is the time to hire as many diverse people on the other side,” Patton insisted passionately, adding that she doesn’t want to be labeled a ‘diva’ for requests that make her feel safe as a black actress.
In an interview with TVLine , Wallace shared the news that Iris West’s new look actually ties into a storyline for the episode.
“There’s a reason her hair is that way in the story, and it has to do with fun, and Iris [West] just being herself,” Wallace said. “It’s about letting Candice show more sides of who she is as a person and as an actress, which is something I support 100 percent.”
It’s no secret Patton’s role as The Flash’s leading lady has been nothing short of groundbreaking in many ways, even influencing the casting of DCEU’s Iris West, although Patton’s rendition will be remembered for years to come. She has been a source of representation for many black women, including myself. Now that she’s able to rock her natural hair on the show, her depiction of Iris West will no doubt feel more meaningful to her fans. About the author

Seattle artist Romson Regarde Bustillo is a finalist in the “Open Media” division for a 2019 Neddy Cornish Award. All finalists will be featured in a group exhibition at Cornish Playhouse this fall. Multi-media visual artist Michelle Kumata has a new art installation at Bellevue City Hall as part of the Bellwether Art Festival from Sept. 13 – 22, 2019 which tells the story of Bellevue Japanese American farmers. “Quiet Hour: The Photography of Yukio Morinaga (1888 – 1968)” is the first solo exhibition by Seattle photographer Yukio Morinaga. He was an important member of the Seattle Camera Club, a group started by Dr. Kyo Koike, which consisted of mostly Japanese members that specialized in the school of Pictorialism. In the 1920’s, his work won prizes in many national and international competitions. There was a silken, poetic sensibility in his work that captured the mood of the streets in early turn-of-the-century Seattle. On view through October 13, 2019. Pacific Bonsai Museum shakes up this Japanese tradition with LAB (Living Art of Bonsai), an experimental collaborative for bonsai innovation This project is a re-sequencing in the order of influence between the bonsai artist, ceramicist and stand maker. This looks at a pivotal moment for both artists. Noguchi was returning to Japan after many years and Hasegawa had spent many years away in Europe. Together they discussed the many possibilities of combining Japanese tradition with outside influences they had had discovered on their travels. “Future IDS At Alcatraz” is a yearlong project, exhibition, and series of monthly public programs on view in the New Industries Building on Alcatraz Island until October, 2019. The installation features ID-inspired artworks created by and with individuals who have conviction histories as they conceive and develop a vision for a future self. In stark contrast to prison-issued IDs, these artworks represent individual stories of transformation. Artist Gregory Sale leads a team of collaborators that translates criminal justice reforms efforts into a visual language to shift thinking about rehabilitation, reentry, and reintegration. “Chiura Obata: An American Modern” is the first retrospective of this noted Bay area artist whose work reflected the glories of the American landscape from the Grand Canyon to Yosemite. Los Angeles has the largest population of Korean Americans and the biggest Koreatown in the United States but until now, there hasn’t been a permanent museum to celebrate this culture. Now, a two story, 16,900 square-foot building by Morphosis Architects will be built in Koreatwon by 2022. The museum has an interesting merger of design influences. A garden and terrace will be grafted on to the top of the building with the help of DSK Landscape Architects. Under the rooftop, the museum will follow the classic courtyard plan of a traditional Korean house.
Jasmine Cho is a baker in Pittsburgh. She creates hand-drawn cookie portraits of Asian American figures to raise awareness of Asian American history and identity. She explains it all in a recent TEDxtalk in Pittsburgh entitled ”Role Models Who Look Like Me: Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders Who Made History”. The art collection of the architect I.M. Pei and his wife, Eileen will be auctioned off by Christie’s in Nov./Dec., 2019 after a global tour with stops in Paris, Hong Kong and Los Angles. The Mukai Japanese Garden and Mukai House on Vashon Island is a non-profit formed around the original house and garden of one of the first Japanese farmers on the Island. Mxmtoon is an 18 year-old Chinese American singer/songwriter from Oakland, California. An internet phenomenon, she records all her music in her bedroom with just a ukulele and her voice. “Umber – The Creative Thinker’s Graphic Journal” is an Oakland, California-based printed publication that focuses on creative culture and visual arts from the perspective of Black & Brown people. Takashi Miike is a maverick Japanese workhorse director with over 100 productions to his credit since his 1991 debut. His films range from violent, bizarre, sexual, dramatic to even family friendly. It is generally agreed though that it was his “Black Society Trilogy” (includes “Shinjuku Triad”, “Rainy Dog” and “Ley Lines”) that put him on the cinematic map. “Grit” is a documentary film that tells the story of villagers in East Java, Indonesia who found a mud slide engulfing and flooding over 15 villages. 12 years later, the sludge is still flowing. “Grit” profiles one girl’s awakening to activism as her mother campaigns against the gas drilling corporation responsible. Some of the films that appeared at the recent SIFF festival will get general distribution across the country. Here are the dates for those films and other new movies. On August 9, 2019, the documentary film “One Child Nation” which looks at the disastrous results of the government decision to limit families to one child is released. Directed by Nafu Wang and Jialing Zhang. August 14, 2019 brings the new Gurinder Chadha film “Blinded by the Light” about a South Asian teenager growing up in Thatcher’s Britain whose mind is opened up when he hears Bruce Springsteen’s music. On August 23, Justin Chon’s new film “Ms. Purple” opens. It is about a Korean American woman who must make amends with her estranged brother in order to properly care for a dying father in LA’s Korea Town.
Lou Ye, the Chinese director who has had his share of difficulties with Chinese government censors in the past, got the go ahead this time to screen his new film “Saturday Fiction” at Venice. It stars Gong Li as a former actress involved in theatrical production and espionage on the eve of WW II.
Hirokazu Kore-eda’s latest film “The Truth” which screened at this year’s Venice International Film Festival takes place in France and stars Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche as mother and daughter. Seattle Arts & Lectures has released their new program details for their 2019/20 season. Among the many highlights included are these – In the “Literary Arts” series, Min Jin Lee will speak. Her last novel “Pachinko” looked at four generations of an immigrant Korean family living in Japan running a pachinko parlor and gave Americans an intimate peek at a mostly hidden Japanese-Korean culture. It was a finalist for the 2017 National Book Award in Fiction. Set for March 17, 2020. In the “Journalism Series”, the award-winning husband/wife reporting team of Nicholas Kristof & Cheryl WuDunn who shared a Pulitzer Prize will talk about their new book “Tightrope” which looks at the crisis in working-class America, the lives of real Americans today. Hugo House, that venerated Northwest center for writers and poets re-opens in brand-new digs with expanded space but in the same location. Catch their readings and celebrate their new space. Also with the opening of the new Hugo House, the writing center rolls out a new series of classes/workshops with a varied number of subjects taught by a talented group of writers like Nisi Shawl, Sonora Jha, R. O. Kwon, Anne Liu Kellor, Michelle Penaloza, Richard Chiem, Diana Xin, Anglela Garbes, Lora Shinn, Aimee Bhausar and Shankar Narayan. One of the events for the 2019-2020 Hugo Literary series is “Taking Liberties” set for Nov. 22, 2019 at 7:30pm which features former US Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera, best-selling novelist Hannah Tinti and Seattle fiction writer Richard Chiem, author of the novel, “King of Joy.” Also new music from blues-based singer-songwriter Amber Flame. Hugo House has selected writers for the 2019-20 Hugo Fellowships. Joyce Chen and Jen Soriano were some of the writers selected. The writers will be given advice and have a space to write. They will give two readings as well. Chen is a writer/editor/creator from Los Angeles. She will be working on a collection of essays that examine the push/pull conflict between American ideals of independence and self-fulfillment and Taiwanese values of family community and sacrifice. Jen Soriano is a Filipinx-American writer who blurs the lines between non-fiction, surrealism and poetry. This volume, part of the Oddly Modern Fairy Tales” series bring together a choice selection of strange stories, inspired by Japanese folk tales as written by Western expatriate Lafcadio Hearn at the turn of the 19 th century.
“Latani of The Distant Sea” (HarperCollins) is the latest book by Newberry Medal-winner Erin Entrada Kelly. This fable inspired by Filipino folklore is filled with a rich mythology and pits a timid twelve-year-old girl against epic tests to survive and save her village from disaster.
“Surrender” (Imprint) by Cao Wenxuan as illustrated by Yu Rong. In this picture book, children will read how seven animals try to survive the sweltering season but all are selfish. It isn’t until they learn to share that they thrive. Lyrical poetic prose is matched by delicate, sensitive images.

“Place and Postcolonial Ecofeminism – Pakistani Women’s Literary And Cinematic Visions” (Nebraska) by Shazia Rahman. A look at contemporary Pakistani literature and film through the voices of women’s narratives.
“Iced In Paradise” (Prospect Park) is by Naomi Hirahara, the Edgar-winning author of the Mas Arai mysteries. In it, we discover a new unlikely detective in Leilani Santiago. Leaving a post-collegiate Seattle life, she returns to the islands to care for an ailing mother and keep afloat a family business. But when she discovers a dead body and her estranged father becomes the suspect, she must work fast to solve the murder and put her life and that of her family back in order.
“Zhuangzi – The Way of Nature” (Princeton) is illustrated by C. C. Tsai with a foreward by Edward Slingerland. Tsui is one of East Asia’s beloved cartoonists. He is adept at taking tales of traditional Asian philosophy and literature and fashioning them into playful and illuminating cartoons. In this volume, he takes on a pillar of classical Daoism aided by a skillful translation by Brian Bruya who provides an informative introduction.
“Skyward: The Story of Female Pilots in WWII” (Flying Eye) by Sally Weng. This children’s picture book tells the little known story of women pilots who learn to fly and contribute to the war effort.
“Banned – Immigration Enforcement In The Time of Trump” (NYU) by Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia tries to make sense of a muddled immigration policy with a thoughtful analysis of immigration law and policy illustrated by insightful case studies and interviews.
“A Hero Born – Legends of the Condor House 1 (St. Martin’s Press) is an epic novel by Jin Yong an translated by Anna Holmwood. This Hong Kong writer has created one of the world’s most beloved martial arts novels that stretches from the mid-fifties to the emergence of Bruce Lee’s career in film. His novels have been widely read in Asia. Hailed as a Chinese “Lord of the Rings”, this kung-fu fantasy features fierce battles, complex characters and plots woven into historical events.
“Maangchi’s Big Book of Korean Cooking” (HMH) by Maangchi is billed as “You Tube’s Korean Julia Child” by the NY Times. This book is called the definitive book on Korean food and the culture it comes from. Set for Oct. 2019 release.
“Divine Gardens – Mayumi Oda & The San Francisco Zen Center” (Parallax) captures the essence of the artist’s art and life as a zen practitioner. It is a celebration of the garden and her joyful female “goddesses” who leap off the page in vibrant colorful hues.

This book is a monograph of the artist’s thirteen performance pieces created over an eighteen-year period. Looks at the historical significance and visual impact of Shimomura’s performance art that continually dealt with racism, discrimination, and the Asian American experience.
“Everest” (Flying Eye) by Sangma Francis & Lisk Feng. A non-fiction picture book full of facts about the world’s highest mountain with marvelous visuals by Feng.
“Rising Son – A US Soldier’s Secret and Heroic Role in World War II” (Sasquatch) by Sandra Vea. The story of a Japanese American man who joined the Military Intelligence Service assigned to convince Japanese Imperial soldiers to lay down their arms while wearing a target on his back. Reveals a little-known history of how the confluence of race, war and loyalty played out when the nation called for the service of those it judged most harshly.
“Things To Make And Break” (Coffee House) is a book of stories by May-Lan Tran. “Bone Talk” (David Fickling Books) by Candy Gourlay tells the story of an indigenous village boy in the Philippines who must use all his skills to battle the encroachment of American invaders in this young adult novel set for November 2019 publication.
“Always Angali” (Bharat Babies) by Sheetal Sheth with illustrations by Jessica Blank. When an Indian girl in America finds she is bullied for her different name, she asks her parents to change it but they refuse. A timeless children’s story about appreciating what makes us special and honoring our differences.

“Paper Son” (Random House) by Julie Leung and illustrated by Chris Sasaki tells the inspiring story of artist Tyrus Wong, the Chinese American responsible for bringing Disney’s Bambi to life.
“Symptoms of a Heart Break” (Imprint) by Sona Charaipotra is a young adult novel of a young doctor treating kids with cancer who must mend her own broken heart even as she starts to become attracted to a patient.
“Hard Damage” (University of Nebraska) by Aria Aber won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in poetry. Leaping from the personal to the political, an Afghani family history comes alive as a poet explores the historical and personal implication of Afghan American relatives in an urgent, lyrical language.
“Anna May Wong – Performing The Modern” (Temple University Press) by Shirley Jennifer Lim. The author explores modernity and women of color through the central presence of this famed Chinese American actress. In this study, Lim captures Wong’s emergence through the contradictions of gender and race.
“The Rise of Kiyosi – Avatar, The Last Airbnder” (Amulet) by F. C. Yee with Avatar co-creator Michael Dante Dimartino. The story behind the longest-living avatar in the history of this beloved world. It maps Kiyoshi’s journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice in this young adult fantasy epic.
“I Love You So Mochi” (Scholastic) by Sarah Kuhn. When a young girl gets into an explosive fight with her mother, she’s able to escape to Kyoto when her grandparents invite her to visit. Oh man. There are a lot of great reasons to choose solo travel in Dublin. As always, I could write an entire novel hyping up a destination, haha.
To be honest, I had a hard time consolidating a few points for why you should choose solo travel in Dublin, but for simplicity’s sake, I broke down my top six reasons below for you.
Enjoy, folks! Howth is a lovely small town near Dublin. 1. Dublin is Statistically Safe
You won’t have to worry too much about your physical safety in Dublin. In all truthfulness, Dublin might be safer than your hometown.
Honestly, you’re more likely to get hit by a car than attacked by a random stranger. Make sure to look the proper way prior to crossing the street. And please, please, please remember that they drive on the left in Ireland, including Dublin. I saw a lot of tourists almost get hit by cars and buses.
Of course, basic common sense applies here, too. You don’t want to wander in an intoxicated state throughout an unfamiliar neighborhood at three in the morning, for instance. I’ll talk more about specific safety tips later in this post. 2. Flights are (Relatively) Short from the USA
Sorry to be USA-centric, but since a huge chunk of my readers are American, I figured it’d be worth pointing out that Dublin is one of the shortest European flights that you can take from the United States.
For example, if you depart from Newark Liberty (close to New York), then you’ll reach Dublin in six hours or less! That’s the same amount of time it takes to fly to some parts of California.
Furthermore, if you’re not a great flyer (haha, like me) and want to go to Europe for the first time, Dublin is an excellent choice for you. Solo Travel Dublin: You’ll Find Hidden Gems 3. Locals are Friendly and Speak English
I think Dublin is a great destination for anxious travelers , because wow, the locals are so welcoming and awesome.
Plus, if you’re an English speaker, you’ll have zero problems in Dublin due to the fact that English is the native language. You won’t encounter any barriers.
As for the locals, Dublin is a city very used to tourists and is able to accommodate their needs well. They’re also quite friendly. I found a lot of people on Couchsurfing.org to go on shopping trips with me, as well as try a variety of restaurants in the city. Dublin was, without a doubt, the place that Couchsurfing worked the best for me with regards to meeting locals.
However, if you’re reluctant to use the internet to meet others, then I’d suggest going to the local pub for a meal. I guarantee someone will strike a conversation with you. 4. Learn About Your Family’s Heritage
Do you have ancestors that came from the Emerald Isle? There’s a good chance you do!
Sure, Ireland’s a pretty small country geographically, but as many as 80 million people worldwide claim Irish heritage. If you’re able to trace your family to Ireland, then Dublin might be a spiritual and inspiring solo visit for you. It’s a good place to start reconnecting with your roots. 5. You Don’t Need a Car in Dublin
Next you’ll be happy to learn that Dublin’s an easily walkable city. Even though it’s the capital, most attractions are reachable using your own two feet. Most days I strolled around the city, wandering from site to site, and taking in all the colorful doors. I never felt too burnt out from walking.
So there’s no need to rent an expensive car here, although it’s recommended to have a car outside of Dublin for venturing into the Irish countryside. Actually it’s smart not to have a car in Dublin. There’s a lot of traffic, and if you’re not used to driving on the left, you will probably get frustrated quickly.
Ditch the car and embrace walking! 6. You’ll Learn a Great Deal of History
Finally you’ll learn a ton of history when visiting Dublin as a solo traveler. And it will tug at your heartstrings.
For example, I felt profound sadness upon seeing the Famine Memorial on the Dublin City Docklands. I knew the Potato Famine was bad (obviously), with 1 million people dying of starvation, but to actually see this artistic representation broke my heart.
Similar sites can be found all over the city.
Ultimately and without a doubt, you’ll gain a true understanding of the Irish struggle for independence in Dublin. This is doubly true if you take a walking tour throughout the capital city (which I recommend you do). Practical Tips for Traveling Alone in Dublin
Time to break out the practicalities. Like I already said, I personally think solo travel in Ireland is super safe and tons of fun! But having a plan is still a good idea.
So I have a couple of suggestions to make your trip even better. Take notes. 1. Watch Your Alcohol Intake
First and foremost, you need to know your limits as a solo traveler. I’m not trying to act like the Morality Police, I swear, but as a solo traveler, you’re responsible for yourself and stuff, and alcohol (obviously) lowers you inhibitions.
Why am I talking about alcohol right away? Dublin is a bit of a “party destination.”
For example, on Fridays and Saturdays, it’s common to see groups of crazily dressed friends roaming the streets for their hen and stag parties. I’m not knocking people for having fun, I promise, but the lively atmosphere is something to be aware of so you’re not caught by surprise.
Take care of yourself. And don’t feel pressured to drink a lot either. 2. Purchase Travel Insurance
Although Dublin is safe, a travel insurance policy is very important especially when you’re traveling alone. For instance, if you get sick or seriously hurt in Dublin, you’ll have to pay for all of your care 100% out of pocket unless you have credible travel insurance.
As for me, I have used World Nomads throughout my years of solo traveling. Their prices are reasonable, and I’ve never had any issues with them at all.

Don’t get me wrong. I adored Dublin. I mean, why else would I take a few hours to write this post for you?
However, as great as Dublin is, you still want to make time for the incredible day trip opportunities located in this part of Ireland.
You can stay close to the city or go for a two hour drive to Western Ireland. After all, Ireland isn’t a huge country geographically so you can see a lot in a single day. For example, with a guided tour, you’re even able to venture out to legendary natural wonders such as Cliffs of Moher or Giant’s Causeway.
My own favorite day trip was seeing Newgrange and Hill of Tara and learning everything about both these beautiful places. I still want to learn all about the mysteries of Newgrange, which is a prehistoric site and on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Solo Travel Dublin: Go & See Joyce! 4. Be Careful if You’re On a Budget
Time to break out some bad news. Dublin isn’t the most budget-friendly place on the planet.
I mean, think about it. Dublin is a big capital city that draws tons of tourists. It would make sense that costs are higher than other places.
If you’re staying in Ireland, you’ll notice a drop in prices as soon as you leave the capital. Try and watch your spending in Dublin to the best of your ability. My Favorite Things to Do Alone in Dublin
Last but not least, there are a lot of wonderful things to do alone in Dublin.
As always, do your own research in addition to the ideas I present in this solo travel guide. You want to consider your own personal interests along with my suggestions. 1. Relax at Trinity & See the Book of Kells
Firstly, going to Trinity College is something you must do, especially on your first trip to Dublin. This university’s magical atmosphere made me want to return to my graduate-level classes.
Most importantly, you’re able to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College. This gorgeous illuminated manuscript of the Gospels dates way back to the 9th century. You can’t take pictures so simply take in the manuscript and enjoy its beauty. 2. Listen to Live Music at a Local Pub
Find a local pub and see what live music is playing on any night of the week. Ireland’s known for some incredible music. Don’t feel afraid to go to a pub alone! It’s perfectly safe to do so. You’ll talk to strangers, dance, and feel festive. Do it! 3. Discover Literary Greatness Throughout the City
Dublin is home to some literary giants. If you adore books, then traveling alone in Dublin almost feels like a rite of passage. Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, Bram Stoker, and more all had residences in Dublin. Go walk in their steps. Another one of the best things to do as literary (and solo) travelers is joining a Dublin Literary Pub Crawl. You’ll learn all about these famous authors and have a few drinks. The Guinness Store is a Dublin Classic. Is it touristic? Sure! But the entire experience is a lot of fun. Plus you’ve the chance to drink a perfectly poured Guinness inside a rooftop bar, which offers spectacular views of the city.
Obviously, the Guinness Storehouse is very popular, so it might be worth buying an entrance ticket to skip the line entirely. 5. Learn Dark History at Kilmainham Gaol
This former prison is another place to learn all about the struggles of the Irish people. Several revolutionaries, seeking independence from England, were imprisoned here. For example, the leaders of the 1916 Easter Riot were imprisoned here and then executed. I actually thought going to the gaol alone was a more poignant experience than if I had gone with friends or family. All in all, it is safe to travel alone in Dublin. I spent about four days in Dublin and never once did I feel under immediate threat.
Like most European cities, the biggest threats that will face you in Dublin will come in the form of petty pickpocketing. However, in my own personal experience, I never felt like I desperately needed to keep a close eye on my purse. If you’re really protective of your belongings, then invest in a Pacsafe anti-theft crossbody bag to ward off roaming hands.
Another thing to watch out for are out of control stag parties. If you ever feel uncomfortable, do what you can to remove yourself from the situation as soon as possible. Don’t worry about being rude. As a solo traveler, you don’t owe strangers anything.

Dublin has an abundance of great accommodation available for you as a solo traveler. Since it’s such a popular place, you have your pick of hostels if you want a cheap place with ample opportunities to meet other people.
On my own stay, I booked a dorm at Times Hostel in Camden Place which is located close to St. Stephen’s Green. It was cosy and in a central yet quiet part of the city.
