Stock market news: October 11, 2019

Stocks rallied Friday, as the high-level trade negotiations between the U.S. and China concluded in Washington. After hitting session highs on the news and rising 500 points, the Dow gave back some of its gains to end Friday’s session. President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that the U.S. and China completed a “very substantial phase one deal” and said that a phase two will start almost immediately after phase one is signed. The first phase is expected to take about three weeks to sign.
Here’s how the markets settled at the end of regular trading Friday:
S&P 500 ( ^GSPC ): +1.09%, or 32.14 points
Dow ( ^DJI ): +1.21%, or 319.92 points
Nasdaq ( ^IXIC ): +1.34%, or 106.26 points
Crude oil ( CL=F ): +2.09% to $54.67 per barrel
Gold ( GC=F ): -0.67% to $1,490.90 per ounce
The president and Chinese Vice Premier’s Friday afternoon meeting followed U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Liu’s meeting earlier in the day. This was the first time since July that the two fueding nations met in-person for negotiations. Investors had been closely monitoring the trade developments because if no progress was made, U.S. tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods would have increase to 30% from 25% on October 15. According to Mnuchin, the October 15 tariff hike would no longer go into effect. The two sides will be meeting again in five to six weeks in Chile.
An oil pump is seen just after sunset outside Saint-Fiacre, near Paris, France. REUTERS/Christian Hartmann More Meanwhile, crude oil surged Thursday after Iran said that one of its oil tankers was hit by missiles in the Red Sea . Oil has since pared most of its earlier gains; however, the Friday attack is just the latest in a slew of recent attacks in the region. The concern is that the attack on Iran’s oil tanker will spark more tension in the already tense region. Additionally, the Red Sea is a key global shipping route for oil, as it links the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean. So far, there has been no claim of responsibility on the attacks.
This all comes after the major attack on Saudi Arabia’s oil infrastructure in September . The fire caused by the attacks left about half of the kingdom’s oil capacity crippled at the time. Production in Saudi Arabia has rebounded relatively quickly following one of the biggest supply disruptions in recent memory, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
STOCKS: Roku scores big upgrade; Walmart U.S. gets new CEO Streaming giant Roku ( ROKU ) was upgraded to Outperform from Sector Perform by RBC . The firm also raised the price target on the stock to $155 from $107, which represents a 33% move higher from current trading levels. Analyst Mark Mahaney wrote in a note to clients that Roku’s valuation has become compelling again after the recent 31% pullback from its recent highs. “In our July 1st downgrade, we wrote that we would become constructive again on a material stock pullback; the shares have had large swings since then, up as much as 68% intra-quarter, and are now trading ~31% below their recent highs,” Mahaney said. He argued that this was the prime buying opportunity.
Roku shares were under pressure over the past month as the streaming wars were running hot. The announcement of Apple TV+ ( AAPL ) and Disney+ ( DIS ) brought out a flurry of Roku bears. As the streaming wars continue, content distributors like Roku and content creators like Disney will have to figure out ways in which to co-exist in a new media era. Shares of Roku have soared 279% in 2019, as of Thursday’s close.
Retail behemoth Walmart ( WMT ) announced a new CEO will be running its U.S. division . John Furner, who ran Sam’s Club will be replacing Greg Foran starting in February. Foran will be taking on a new role as CEO of Air New Zealand. Foran leaves behind a positive legacy at Walmart and was seen as a key figure in the retailer’s turnaround. Furner started working at Walmart in 1993 as a part-time store associate in the garden department. Walmart shares have been on fire, as the company impresses investors with strong same-store sales growth and online sales momentum. The retailer has bounced back in recent years even as e-commerce giant Amazon ( AMZN ) threatened to disrupt the entire traditional brick-and-mortar retail landscape. Walmart stock rose 30% so far this year and hit a record high Friday.

Youth Joins Boston Ballet | Redwood City, CA Patch

arts & entertainment Redwood City Youth Joins Boston Ballet Former Woodside High student Louise Hautefeuille, whose dancing started at age 4, has sauntered into the hearts of the Boston Ballet. By Sue Wood, Patch Staff Oct 3, 2019 12:48 pm ET | Updated Oct 3, 2019 12:49 pm ET {{ replyButtonLabel }} Reply {{ replyCount }} Redwood City resident Louise Hautefeuille, 17, has been groomed for the Boston Ballet. (Menlo Park Academy of Dance) REDWOOD CITY, CA — Ballerinas know they’ve hit the big time when Boston hits the resume.
Just ask 17-year-old Louise Hautefeuille, a San Francisco Peninsula native from Redwood City who attended Woodside High School before moving to this historic East Coast city who joined the Boston Ballet School to be groomed under its trainee program.
The teen, who now takes online high school classes as a senior this year, danced at the Menlo Park Academy of Dance from age 4 to 15 before jetting off to one of the finest arts and cultural venues in the United States. She most recently was offered a position in the Corps de ballet at age 17, which skips two years as an apprentice with the second tier of the Boston Ballet.
“It’s always been a far away goal,” she told Patch, adding it helps to have family support. Her parents, sister and brother also moved out to Boston to accompany her pursuits.
“I said to myself: ‘Ok, so this can really happen,'” she said of one of those “pinch me” moments every youth who fulfills her dreams has. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
When she began dancing as a little more than a toddler at Menlo Park Academy of Dance, she studied under the Royal Academy of Dance curriculum. She attended summer programs at Master Ballet Academy, L’Ecole de Danse de l’Opera de Paris and the Boston Ballet School — both with scholarships.
After receiving first place at the San Francisco Youth American Grand Prix in 2017, she was invited to join Boston Ballet School as a trainee. At Boston Ballet School, the teenager was awarded the Pao Scholarship in 2018. She has performed alongside the company in Sir Frederick Ashton’s “Cinderella,” George Balanchine’s “Coppelia,” August Bournonville’s “La Sylphide,” John Cranko’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Mikko Nissinen’s “The Nutcracker” and Marius Petipa’s “Sleeping Beauty.” She also performed in Boston Ballet School’s Next Generation program, a maneuver she said opened her eyes to creative, new techniques in modern ballet such as the progressive style of “balanchine.”
She joined the Boston Ballet as an artist in 2019.
Her Menlo Park Academy instructor Sarah Jane Measor said she always knew that in the 11 years she worked with the youngster she was destined for a great future in ballet.
“Louise is a natural talent. She’s got the physique and beautiful feet. She took to it right away,” Measor told Patch. “What she has accomplished is a big deal.”
As for the perception of ballet as a glamorous life, Measor placed that notion into its proper perspective.
“It takes a lot of hard work, and Louise demonstrated that. You do have to look after your body,” she said.
The longtime ballet instructor emphasized the craft is much like other athletics like football. In other words, you can’t do it forever.
“I have no doubt Louise that even after her ballet career would be successful in something else. She’s delightful inside and out,” she said.
Measor witnessed firsthand the journey her young protege is on. In 2017, she went to Boston to see the teen make the quintessential ballet performance of the “Nutcracker.”

Exactly Why Are Beauty Ads Nevertheless Fetishizing women that are asian?

Exactly Why Are Beauty Ads Nevertheless Fetishizing women that are asian?
K-beauty are formally mainstream, nevertheless the industry happens to be slow to embrace spokesmodels that are asian do not fit the “ideal.” Writer Deanna Pai explores. Asians are receiving a brief minute, and they are only a few crazy rich. K-pop movie stars are actually fixtures that are front-row runway programs in the behest of American developers. Korean beauty is not any longer merely a “trend”—it’s a staple in US women’s routines. And based on the final period’s runway variety report, the fall 2018 shows showcased more women of color—including types of Asian descent—than ever prior to. This certainly looks like progress, but for many women who don’t fit the idealized mold of what it looks like to be Asian, this representation has begun to feel opportunistic on the surface.
That it is taken this really miss Asians also to be noticed is not precisely astonishing. Considering that Korean and beauty that is japanese have actually therefore completely saturated the wonder market, you would believe that the sweetness ad space is in the same way overwhelmed. Which includesn’t exactly been the situation.
The presence of Asian feamales in the wonder globe had been nonexistent whenever I had been kid within the 1990s. We read lots of publications with white ladies regarding the covers plus in the pages, and just whenever we traveled into the Queens neighborhood of Flushing—home to my grand-parents additionally the 2nd biggest population ukrainian brides for marriage that is chinese ny City—did I ever see Asian ladies on indications for salons and spas. (Upstate nyc, where we spent my youth, isn’t precisely an Asian-American enclave.)
In those days, not really established Japanese brands had Asian spokesmodels representing them into the market that is american. That did not go unnoticed by Asian-American females. “the possible lack of Asian ladies in the news, including beauty marketing, did influence me personally as just a little woman in what—and who—I understood to be gorgeous,” states Andrea, a recently available law college grad in new york. “I’m really proud to spot as a woman that is asian-american and I also appreciate seeing an individual who seems like me personally in marketing.” A grad student in San Francisco, the lack of Asian visibility no longer even registers for my other friend Pei. “Yes, i have noticed you will find not many women that are asian models in every industry—beauty or elsewhere,” she informs me. “But i have simply gotten familiar with it.”
Revlon had been one of the primary to engage spokespeople that is asian you start with actress Valerie Chow in 1998 and following with Lucy Liu in 2000. But 2010 was the actual watershed 12 months. Not merely did Vogue devote a fashion that is entire to eight Asian supermodels within their December 2010 problem, but Estee Lauder additionally called model Liu Wen, through the Hunan province of Asia, its international spokesmodel, making her the very first Asian girl to partner using the beauty giant. Rather than long later, Maybelline called Shanghai-born model Shu Pei Qin its latest worldwide ambassador, where she joined up with Crouching Tiger, concealed Dragon actress Zhang Ziyi (whom’d been an element of the Maybelline roster since 2001).
Still, the timing appeared to be strategic. “Asia is our fastest-growing market,” explained Jane Hertzmark Hudis, Group President of Estee Lauder businesses, in a 2010 meeting with W. “What better means to honor that rather than employ a indigenous associated with the nation?” Along with looking for Asian or Asian-American females for his or her skill, it absolutely was additionally a savvy company move. Which is become increasingly clear with all the constant improvements of Asian spokesmodels into the beauty industry from the time: Chinese model Sui he had been called the facial skin of Shisiedo’s worldwide makeup products line in 2012; L’Oreal Paris tapped South Korean model Soo Joo Park in 2015, and that exact exact exact same year K-beauty blogger Irene Kim collaborated from the limited-run Estee Edit and L’Oreal Paris included Chinese model Xiao Wen Ju; Maybelline brought Taiwanese model I-Hua Wu up to speed in 2016; and last year Chinese model Fei Fei Sun joined up with Estee Lauder. Haircare, nonetheless, don’t actually follow suit. The absolute most notable agreements are Pantene, whom collaborated with actress Priyanka Chopra in 2017, and Redken, whom caused Park in 2015 and partnered with K-pop celebrity Amber Liu this current year.
One reason behind this lag is because of just what Wan-Hsiu Sunny Tsai, Ph.D., an advertising specialist and professor that is associate University of Miami’s class of Communications, calls localization; these more recent K- and J-beauty brands like to better resonate to an American—and therefore largely white—audience. And until recently, Asian models had been only here to produce a mystical, non-American vibe. “Overall, the ‘Asian appearance’ in fashion and beauty marketing is mainly utilized to signal something exotic and differing, which really restricted the roles of Asian models,” describes Tsai.
This fetishization of Asian ladies gets slightly better, nonetheless it has not disappeared. “Of program, you may still find problems of stereotyping, for instance the propensity to feature Asian models with stereotypical Asian features, e.g. slanted, monolid eyes and long, right hair,” claims Tsai. In reality, it’s specially apparent considering the fact that the most of Asian models who do secure these huge beauty discounts have actually a typical denominator: Straight black colored locks, reasonable epidermis, and a slim create. Limiting spokespeople to east women that are asian these features keeps that fetishization alive.
Brands are ignoring the undeniable fact that no, Asians do not all appearance alike, and no, that laugh is not also funny. As an example, none regarding the models tapped by big beauty organizations have actually a darker complexion, apart from Chopra, who is South Asian. Dad’s part for the family members is Cantonese and from the long type of farmers, so the skin we have tone shifts between tan and extremely tan with regards to the time of the year. The skin that is porcelain silky locks many times related to Asians, and driven by both Asian and American beauty requirements, doesn’t exist for several of us, whether we are eastern Asian or otherwise not. Where’s the representation for Asian ladies with wild hair, like Sandra Oh? Wherein’s the biracial woman that is asian a makeup deal? We try not to all appear to be Soo Joo.
This unexpected increase in the presence of Asians is not entirely the result of Asia’s being a profitable market, however. Additionally it is to maintain with all the needs of an increasingly diverse client base. “as a result of the growing population that is multicultural the U.S. while the associated trend of multicultural advertising, i believe the aesthetic industry was making noticeable progress within their marketing representation of Asian models,” claims Tsai.
Now it’s time brands recognize the purchasing power and needs of Asian-Americans. “If a business utilized models that are asian I would become more likely to check on it off to see if their products or services suitable my color,” claims my pal Amy, a physician in Ann Arbor, Michigan. “we am more aggravated by the possible lack of foundation that matches my color tone—everything is either pink or some sort of bronze.” But also that is not constantly sufficient. The other week, I couldn’t find a single match for my sort-of-olive, sort-of-tan, definitely-not-peachy skin tone while swatching a new foundation that offers over 30 shades. We invested fifteen minutes and a trash can’s worth of makeup products reduction wipes not to locate a match that is good.
Exactly the same is true of natual skin care. “For brands from who we never see Asian and Asian-American models, I innately feel like they will haven’t considered Asian epidermis whenever developing their products or services, and so will be more skeptical about them whenever I’m shopping,” says Andrea. “I’m more prepared to spend some money and simply simply just take dangers on those items that appear to focus on Asian and Asian-American ladies.” It is plainly a process that is slow. “After therefore a long time, there are not many Asian faces in Hollywood,” says Tsai, whom notes that lots of beauty spokesmodels have a tendency to result from the movie industry. “But as Asian-Americans are now actually a more force that is visible main-stream media—plus popular-culture influences from Asian countries—advertising as a mirror of societal trends must get up.” And contains big effects beyond merely attractive to a customer that is new from the company end. Including a broad number of asian models also forces consumers to reconsider and expand their concept of beauty.
While these efforts have now been a start that is good there is nevertheless quite a distance to get. One recommendation? Somebody has to provide the not-so-stereotypical, wavy-haired Awkwafina a beauty deal—stat.
